iOS 5 Beta 4 Blocks OTA Updates on Jailbroken iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

The latest iOS 5 beta 4 comes with Over-the-Air (OTA) iOS firmware updates for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. If you’re running iOS 5 beta 3, you can easily download and install iOS 5 beta 4 OTA without connecting to the iTunes. However, if you’re jailbroken, you wont be able to update iOS over-the-air.

MuscleNerd of the Dev-Team has confirmed that OTA iOS updates won’t work on jailbroken iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch due to an explicit check of /Applications.
MuscleNerd: “The 5.0b4 OTA update won’t work on JB devices due to an explicit check of /Applications..almost like a present from Apple”

Apparently Apple’s OTA iOS update software checks the /Applications folder to see if it is a real directory. However, the jailbreak users can still update to the latest iOS via iTunes Sync.
This isn’t Apple’s first attempt to prevent iOS 5 jailbreaking. We’ve already reported about the blob monster that Apple has in place in iOS 5 to stop users from downgrading firmware using SHSH blobs. Hopefully the Jailbreak community will come up with a workaround to enable over the air updates on jailbroken iDevices.
iOS 5 was unveiled last month at WWDC 2011 which beings 200+ new features. We have already listed iOS 5 Features. Prominent features includes Reminders, enhanced Mobile Safari, iMessage, and OTA firmware updates.
