Nokia’s third-quarter earnings report looked more like a company falling off a cliff than the once dominant force at the top of the mobile phone world. The decline was so steep Apple is now officially the king of the smartphone hill.
Shipments of Nokia smartphones declined by nearly 34 percent to about 16.7 million units this past quarter, while Apple’s shipments cruised past estimates to settle at 20.3 million iPhones shipped (and are continually rising).
Also, please note that Apple has a new product release every year, instead of every month or there about.
Financial Times made the comment
Apple was already the biggest smartphone maker by revenue and profits, but the April-June period marked the first time it had surpassed Nokia in volume.
Nokia’s market share fell from 50% to 25% in the June quarter, as the iPhone gained the top spot in Australiaalone.
It’s an iPhone and Android world out there, everyone else is just playing catchup for now. It’s either that, or fall to the bottom.
