It has been two days since Apple seeded iOS 5 beta 5 to developers. Naturally, when this beta went live and people started downloaded it, we were flooded with questions as to when a jailbreak for iOS 5 beta 5 will be released because usually it takes the iPhone Dev Team less than 12 hours to release a redsn0w update to jailbreak the latest iOS beta firmware. Now after two days, the Dev Team has finally released redsn0w 0.9.8b5 to jailbreak and boot iOS 5 beta 5 tethered on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
The iPhone Dev Team says:
redsn0w has been updated to 0.9.8b5, adding support for Apple’s new iOS5 beta5 (point it directly at the beta5 IPSW). Please use this only if you’re a jailbreak app developer with a legit Apple dev account, and remember it’s a tethered jailbreak for now!
Keep in mind that redsn0w 0.9.8b5 will jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch tethered on iOS 5 beta 5, meaning that if your devices runs out of battery or you have to reboot it due to any problem, you will always have to connect it to the computer, run redsn0w and boot your device tethered.
It was yesterday that we broke the news on the internet that redsn0w 0.9.8 beta 5 will be released for iOS 5 beta 5 jailbreak as the previous release of redsn0w was not capable of jailbreaking iOS 5 beta 5. Basically, if the exploit used to jailbreak any previous firmware exists in the latest firmware update, there is no need to release a new redsn0w as it is very well capable of jailbreaking the new firmware if you just point redsn0w to the ipsw of the previous firmware. So obviously, when iOS 5 beta 5 was pushed to us OTA, we fired up redsn0w 0.9.8b4 and pointed it to the iOS 5 beta 4 ipsw, and surprisingly did the jailbreak however redsn0w was unable to boot the device tethered and that is when it was confirmed a new redsn0w update will be released in order to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 5 on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
Please note that you can not jailbreak iPad 2 using redsn0w on iOS 5. Actually you can’t jailbreak the iPad 2 on any firmware except iOS 4.3.3, and that too using JailbreakMe 3.0.
The procedure to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 5 using redsn0w 0.9.8b5 is extremely simple. Just follow the detailed instructions given here to jailbreak / boot iOS 5 beta 5 tethered. Don’t forget to select the iOS 5 beta 5 ipsw when redsn0w asks you to in Step 5.
