Nokia announces 808 PureView: Belle OS, 4-inch display, 41-megapixel camera(!) (video)

Remember that Nokia PureView tease from a few days ago? Well, suddenly it all makes sense. We are indeed looking at an imaging flagship phone and a true successor to the N8. It's called the 808 PureView and it's expected to reach Europe in the next quarter for a price of 450 Euros. Before we move on to its craziest feature -- the camera, of course! -- let's run down the other key specs: The OS is Symbian Belle; the engine is a 1.3GHz single-core chip; the display is 4-inches corner to corner but its resolution is a Nokia-style 360 x 640 (nHD). There's 512MB of RAM and 16GB of on-board storage that is thankfully expandable via microSD. A Pentaband modem increases the chances of getting a signal while globe-trotting, while data speeds will top out at plain HSPA 14.4Mbps. Now that Carl Zeiss-lensed camera: it handles continuous-focus 1080p, but is claimed to have an incredible resolution of over 41-megapixels when shooting stills -- or 34-megapixels for 16:9 images. It's achieved by some clever sub-pixel interpolation jiggery-pokery that basically entails five pixels being merged into one, but we'll dig deeper very soon. It's expected to arrive in May at a price of €450 and if you're curious, we've got a gallery of beautiful hands-on images and video for your pleasure.

Nokia 808 PureView ushers in a revolution in smartphone imaging

Nokia sets a new industry standard with the first in a range of high end experiences based on exclusive Nokia PureView imaging technologies.

Barcelona, Spain - Nokia today ushered in a new era in high-end smartphone imaging with the Nokia 808 PureView. This is the first smartphone to feature Nokia PureView imaging technologies, bringing together high resolution sensors, exclusive Carl Zeiss optics and Nokia developed algorithms, which will support new high-end imaging experiences for future Nokia products.

The Nokia 808 PureView features a large, high-resolution 41 megapixel sensor with high-performance Carl Zeiss optics and new pixel oversampling technology. At standard resolutions (2/3, 5 and 8 megapixels) this means the ability to zoom without loss of clarity and capture seven pixels of information, condensing into one pixel for the sharpest images imaginable. At high-resolution (38 megapixel maximum) it means the ability to capture an image, then zoom, reframe, crop and resize afterwards to expose previously unseen levels of details. With superior low-light performance and the ability to save in compact file sizes for sharing in email, MMS, and on social networks, the Nokia 808 PureView makes it possible for anyone to capture professional looking images in any conditions.

In addition to superior still imaging technology, the Nokia 808 PureView, also includes full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom and the world's first use of Nokia Rich Recording. Rich Recording enables audio recording at CD-like levels of quality, previously only possible with external microphones. The Nokia 808 PureView also features exclusive Dolby Headphone technology, transforming stereo content into a personal surround sound experience over any headphones and Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback.

"Nokia PureView imaging technology sets a new industry standard by whatever measure you use," said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices. "People will inevitably focus on the 41 megapixel sensor, but the real quantum leap is how the pixels are used to deliver breath-taking image quality at any resolution and the freedom it provides to choose the story you want to tell."

Effort underway to port HARET / Android to Gen 1 Windows Phones

htc-touchhd-haretSome ex-Windows Mobile users may remember HARET as the tool used to enable to booting of Android on the old HTC HD2.
Now an effort is underway to bring the tool to Windows Phone 7.  I think it is safe to say the lead on the project is doing this more as a way to convert a nice Windows Phones to Android, writing:
WP7 is and will be shipped on many devices with quality hardware. In order to be able to run Linux on these, a novel aim is to investigate the use of HaRET on WP7 based devices.
I am sure however that there are a few Windows Phone users who would not mind hacking around with their device to access the full potential of the hardware.
I myself on the other hand would prefer an effort to port Windows Phone to some tasty Android hardware, like the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, with its massive battery and thin form factor. Maybe with Windows Phone 8…
Read more on the effort, which is really still only in the planning phases, at XDA-Developers.com here.

Confirmed: iPad 3 Has a 2048x1536 Retina Display

Over the past couple of months, several photos of displays claimed to be for the iPad 3have surfaced from various sources. Such parts leaks are typical with the device's expected debut early next month. While reports have claimed that these displays are high-resolution "Retina" displays, there has been no definite confirmation of these claims so far.

MacRumors has now been able to obtain one of these iPad 3 displays and examine it under a microscope in an effort to determine whether it is indeed an ultra-high resolution Retina display. Physically, the purported iPad 3 display is the same size as the current iPad 1 and iPad 2 display at 9.7" in diagonal, and looks quite similar to the naked eye.

However, when comparing the iPad 3 display to one from an iPad 2 under a microscope, the difference in resolutions becomes readily apparent, with the iPad 3 display's pixels appearing to be one-quarter the size of those on the iPad 2.

Since we only had a raw iPad 3 display with no method to power it, taking high quality photos of the pixels was difficult. Still, even with the relatively poor lighting, you can easily make out the pixels on each display (made up of red, green and blue elements). We highlighted a cluster of 4 pixels (2x2) from the iPad 2 to compare it to the same area on the iPad 3. On the iPad 3, the same cluster was occupied by 16 pixels (4x4) -- exactly twice the resolution in each direction.

Extrapolating out, the iPad 3 screen should carry a full resolution of 2048x1536, exactly twice the linear resolution of the iPad 1 and iPad 2 which is 1024x768. Such a screen should be able to display much sharper images as compared to the previous generation iPads.

While these iPad 3 screens weren't directly sourced from Apple, they are labeled as OEM replacement parts for the iPad 3 and are apparently in mass production. The difficulties of any 3rd party in mass producing 2048x1536 9.7" Retina displays make us quite confident that these represent legitimate iPad 3 parts.introduce the iPad with a media event on March 7, and the device is rumored to be carrying this high-resolution display, a new A6 system-on-a-chip, and LTE support for models with cellular data capabilities.

Nokia N9 Ice Cream Sandwich port in progress

Much as we begrudge Nokia their wring (not to mention stubborn, deluded and more than a little incestuous) decision to go with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform for their current generation of smartpohnes, it’s hard to deny that their hardware and industrial design is top-notch. Home Android developer Alexey Roslykov seems to agree, as he’s been instrumental in porting Android to Nokia’s underground favorite the N900. Now he’s on to something a little more modern, in terms of both hardware and software: getting a full-fledged Ice Cream Sandwich port running on Nokia’s drool-worthy N9. The developer tweeted out the phot below with the simple desciption, “Progress“.

For those in need of a brief refresher: the N9 was to be Nokia’s saving grace for the smartphone world, the first device to run the MeeGo OS created by a collaboration between Nokia and Intel. As a showpiece for the next-generation OS, the N9 was well-received by reviewers, if not consumers (pricing started at around $650 equivalent) when it launched in fall 2011. Even at launch the N9 was something of a lame duck as far as competition goes: it came out more than six months after Nokia CEO Stephen Elop (a former Microsoft executive) announced his intention to switch the company’s smartphones to Windows Phone 7. By the way, almost exactly a year later, Windows Phone 7′s world market share stands at less than 2%.
Not much information on the status of the port is available, but if the overlapping lock screen, home screen and Ice Cream Sandwich widgets are any indication, it’s very slow going indeed. Even so, an apparent associate of Roslyakov notes that the software is running in a dual-boot configuration, presumably keeping the MeeGo OS intact. As a mid/late 2011 top of the line smartphone with a 1Ghz OMAP processor and a gigabyte of RAM, the hardware itself should be more than capable of running the latest version of Android; it’s just a matter of getting the correct drivers, software configuration and permissions going. It should be noted that a fully-functional Android port on the N9 may or may not be possible.

iOS 5 Jailbreak announced

Please using :

  • redsn0w 0.9.9b4 for Mac
  • redsn0w 0.9.9b4 for Windows

  • iPad 3 will be released the first week of March !

John Paczkowski of AllThingsD claims that Apple will introduce the iPad 3 event to be held the first week of March.
Specifically, the newspaper says the event will be held in San Francisco, probably the most classic Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Unfortunately, it is not a release date of the device, but judging from past iPad 3 will be in stores one a.m. to two a.m. weeks after the announcement.

    iPad 3 release date

Sources say the company has chosen the first week in March to debut the successor to the iPad 2 and will do so at one of its trademark special events. The event will be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple’s preferred location for big announcements like these. No word yet on a street date for the iPad 3 (assuming that’s what it’s called), though my guess is retail availability will follow roughly the same schedule as that of the iPad 2: available for purchase a week or so after the event. If I had to guess on a date we would say that likely is the March 7, Wednesday.
Finally, the newspaper reports that the iPad 3 will have a Retina display high-resolution 2048 × 1536 pixels and much faster processor with upgraded graphics. The latest rumors to the iPad 3 has four processor cores but TheVerge publication of reports that the device will continue with a dual core processor.

    Nokia Lumia Coffee Tab tablet

One great thing about concepts would be this – you, as the designer, are not bound to the limitations of the physical and design aspects in the real world, but instead, you can let your imagination run free. The Lumia Coffee Tab tablet that was recently unearthed could very well point towards a future tablet device from the Finnish smartphone company. Right now, Nokia does not have any tablet in the market, but with the advent of Windows 8, things might change eventually. I for one, would like to see Nokia play a greater role in the smartphone and tablet markets after being “revived” by making Windows Phone as their operating system of choice. Just what does the Lumia Coffee Tab tablet concept hold?

For starters, there is a 1.4GHz processor, 512MB RAM, a choice of internal memory that starts from 16GB and goes all the way to 64GB, a 9.7″ AMOLED clearback display at 1,280 × 800 resolution, an 8-megapixel shooter at the back, while a 2-megapixel shooter is located in front for video calls, rounded off by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity. Since Windows 8 tablet edition is its operating system of choice, you know for sure this going to be worth looking at when it arrives.

The camera isn’t in the middle but in the top left corner (so not impeded I guess when held in landscape with two hands). I’m not sure if those buttons are hardware or appear with the Windows 8 swipe. There’s even a nice picture below where its set in natural surroundings.

    • Lumia “coffee” tab
    • 1.4GHz cpu
    • 512Mb ram
    • 16/32/64Gb storage
    • 9.7″ AMOLED “clearblack” display (1280×800)
    • 8Mp Rear camera, 2Mp front facing camera
    • Windows 8 tablet edition
    • Wifi/3G connectivity

How to fix T-Mobile’s Samsung Vibrant GPS Issues (Easy)

    samsung-vibrant-front-small
We’ve received various reports that the GPS on the Samsung Vibrant is broken out of the box. Locking on to a GPS signal can take can take a while, if it does at all, and the location can be rather inaccurate at that. The folks at XDA-Developers have figured out a quick fix that won’t require doing any serious modifications to your phone’s software. Samsung says they are working on an update proper to fix the GPS issues with the phone, but for now just follow these instructions to get yours acting the way it should.
    1. Navigate to Settings > Location & Security and uncheck the box next to “Use Wireless Networks.”
    2. Go to the phone’s dialer and enter the number *#*#1472365#*#* then press send to access the phones LBSTestMode menu.
    3. In the LBSTestMode menu, press “Application Settings” and change “Operation Mode” to “MS Based.”
    4. Navigate to the “SUP/LCP Settings” and the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com (make sure NOT to place “www.” in front) and port 7276.
    5. Make sure the settings are saved and reboot your phone.
    6. Navigate back to Settings > Location & Security and check the box next to “Use Wireless Networks.”
    GalaxySLBsTestMode
And that should do it. This fix is also confirmed to work on the Samsung Captivate, but attempting to replicate this on the international Galaxy S I had no luck. If the fix doesn’t seem to work for you and you’d like to reset to your old setting repeate the same process but use the following information at the LBSTestMode menu:
    • Operation Mode: Standalone
    • SERVER: www.spirent-lcs.com
    • PORT: 7275
If all else fails, you may just have to wait for an update to be issued for the fix, but hopefully this will set your wayfaring GPS straight.
